Nuclear Bunker Discs

Aimeé Nash - The Black Ryder. Nuclear Bunker Discs.

We're no longer looking for perfection...

How do you judge an album? Standout tracks...more quality than filler...

Or the sheer delight in listening from the very first to the very last note?

I know which I want...& "Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride" never lets up from start to finish. It's utterly spellbinding. But you surely must know that by now...

Miss Aimeé Nash kindly gave up her time to have a bit of a gossip & a giggle, plus to choose her 5 albums to spend the rest of eternity listening to, deep in the recesses of the Nuclear Bunker.

Here's what we found out that The Black Ryder have been up to & will be up to in the coming months.

Over to Aimeé:

"I’m pleased to say that the last couple of months have been some very inspiring times for Scott + myself.

We just finished 3 new musical works to accompany films for friends, loves, + Australian entrepreneurs MANIAMANIA. Two incredibly talented ladies who have created a most impressive jewelry line that incorporates themes of mysticism, magic, psychedelia + beyond.

A couple of our songs from ‘Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride’ were used on their films for their previous collection ‘Dust’:

We recently caught up & they’d shared with me that they were working on their latest collection ‘The Third Man’. We were so impressed by their designs as well as the inspirations behind their latest line; Kenneth Anger, Brian Gysin, Maya Deren, William Burroughs.. to name but a few... that the thought of creating some sort of sonic landscapes to accompany their films was too exciting an idea to not bring to fruition.

The films launch later this week sometime, so you’ll hear more on this soon no doubt, but really looking forward to sharing these with people as it feels like it’s a different side of us…

Scott + I have been writing + recording, and as said, I’m feeling inspired & also excited about where we’re at. I don’t want to say too much about that now, I don’t know how long it’s going to take or when it’s going to be finished, but it’s all feeling pretty good, and I’m enjoying the process."

First up, 2 live tracks from The Black Ryder, including the absolutely epic performance of Grass, then onto Aimeé's 5 choices...

1. SPACEMEN 3 – DREAMWEAPON.

"These are in no particular order, but this is the first album I think of when people ask me what albums are in my top 5, top 10.. it’s always hard to narrow down music that you love to just 5 or 10 albums.. but this album is always the first that I think of.

This music soothes my soul.

I went through a period of listening to this every day for years. Spacemen 3 were the first band I think I really geeked out over. Their tones, drones, fuzz, lyrical content.. a big inspiration certainly, and will always be very close to my heart.

We played with Spectrum this year, which was a huge honor, and I got poor Pete Kember to sign all of my Spacemen 3 + Sonic Boom + Spectrum LP’s + CD’s. I don’t think he knew just how many he’d have to sign when I asked, and I can’t think of anyone else I’d ever even want them to sign my stuff, but this is the exception."

2. SPIRITUALIZED – LAZER GUIDED MELODIES.

"So much beauty in one album.

This album is magic in so many ways. I think it’s the perfect soundtrack to a break up, a new romance.. When you’re high, when you’re low. It’s uplifting and it strikes an emotional chord the whole way through.

Shine A Light is a favorite song of mine. The precision of the work blows my mind. There’s no question that Spiritualized has inspired me, in the way that their music makes you feel.

If the whole world was blown to smithereens, I’d be pretty happy if I was spared even just Lazer Guided Melodies + Dreamweapon to carry me through to the end."

3. BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE – THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES' SECOND REQUEST.

"I mean, which album do you choose? Now THAT is a tough one.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Jeez.

At any given time, my favorites could be: Methodrone, Strung Out in Heaven, Take it From the Man, Thank God For Mental Illness, Give It Back..

But now I’m cheating.. so I’ll go with ‘Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request’.

Mostly because I’ve been listening to this album a lot lately driving, it just puts me in such a good mood. All Around You makes me want to run out + join a hippie commune + eat mushrooms + be happy or something… and Anenome has always been a favorite, and one that I have had the extreme pleasure of singing with BJM a number of times. The quality of the work is evident. I’ll take these guys with me into oblivion for sure."

4. TAMARYN - WAVES.

"Tamaryn + I were released on the same label over here in the USA, which is how I first discovered her music. We started communicating maybe a year and a half ago & we sent some early emails of mutual appreciation back + forth.

Since then I’m delighted to say I’ll count her as one of my dear friends and certainly one of my favorite sounds + albums to have emerged in too long."

5. THE BLACK RYDER - BUY THE TICKET, TAKE THE RIDE

"Yes, I am really going to include my own album. Why wouldn’t I?!

Regardless that this is ‘our’ album and music we made, I dig the music + where it’s coming from.

I’ve listened to this more than any album, not just because we had to because we wrote, engineered, produced this ourselves, but also because we set out with the intention of making music that we wanted to listen to as well.

I believe we achieved that.

There are still moments that I’ll hear + think I wish we did that differently.. but… it is what it is.. and I love it for that."
