Going Beyond to define the sound of PeRPLeXa...
The definition of "to perplex", means to cause someone to be completely baffled, puzzled. To confuse mentally. With that definition in mind, even before playing the PeRPLeXa album Gone Beyond, you would probably be quite unsure of what to expect. It’s hard to really nail down one “sound” for this band. One thing is for certain, listening to this will expand your consciousness. No drugs are needed (although they may heighten the experience).
PeRPLeXa are psychedelic to the core, but not the traditional psychedelic sound that you are used to hearing. Layers and layers of sounds, with the amazing tribal like percussion being the base for everything to build off of. With spooky keyboards, intricate acoustic and electric guitar work, classical style violin and cello, very low key vocals that float in the background, with loads of drone, reverb and groove, it’s a beautiful mix mash of sounds, that when all put together, will have your whole being swirling in a trance.
One thing I noticed while listening this album over and over, is that it’s an album of many uses. Not only could you listen to this while happy, floating on a cloud but also, while sad, to help pull the tears out. You could listen to this while watching the sunrise, as well as the sunset. You could listen to this on a rainy day, as you watch the raindrops race down the window. Or while you watch the shadows from the trees dance across the ground on a late sunny afternoon. You could listen to this, while making deep passionate love. You could listen to this alone at late hours of night, while the world sleeps. It's all there, for the taking.
The percussion in this album is by far the stand out sound. But it’s far from over powering. It’s not “in your face”. What I mean, is you will be instantly drawn to it, cause of how well it is placed, and just how well it is as a whole (and damn is it good). But then you’ll notice all the other sounds. The more you listen to this album, and you start to dissect the layers, (and believe me, there are many), there will come a point where you just stop, and say holy shit. It’s just so full and so incredibly beautiful.
Ever sit and watch a cloud grow? Imagine yourself inside that cloud...as that cloud builds and builds, as it over takes you.
Now imagine that cloud is sound.
That is PeRPLeXa.
