Reconnect with humanity...run to the Hills.
"[White Hills is] one of the years gnarliest psych slabs – a schizophrenic trip through Acid Mothers Temple riff bludgeon, Boris chug, shaggy pseudo-grunge, and tender bursts of formless noise." – Village Voice
"I found my infinite headbang in White Hills, a relentlessly heavy psych-rock band with scorching wah-wah and fantastic outfits." – NPR All Songs Considered (Lars Gotrich)
"A perfect space-rock storm of drone, mind-melting psychedelia, overdriven guitars and heavy bass, White Hills is the rightful heir to Hawkwind's massive legacy." – Goldmine
Need we really say anymore? White Hills are the real fuckin' deal. Not content with blowing your brains out, they're quite keen on you placing them back in again & taking a good look around the world we live in...Cryptic? Nah, take a look at what Ego Sensation, bassist from White Hills had to say about H-p1:
"We can barely pay our rent each month but we are willing to pull out our credit cards and go into debt each time a new iPhone promises a better connection. The joke is on us. Our greater connectivity has caused us to disconnect from our humanity. We have been sold the religion of consumerism to feed the corporate machine. We have been tricked into believing that wanting our tax dollars to pay for our own health care is treacherous to the ideals of a democratic society. H-p1 is symbolic of the simplification of complex ideas to keep the masses from questioning the system."
So what else do we know? There's a White Hills US & European tour coming up in September & October, plus some solo stuff from Ego Sensation late on in the year...keep up to date with all the news through the links below. We're always delighted to find out a little more about the interests of our guests as they venture into the bunker, so what else can we tell you...
Over to the lady herself:
"I'm a bit of a renaissance woman. I'm a video artist: I make most of the band's videos and also a lot of dark comedy shorts that can be seen on my youtube page. I also make 3-dimensional art: mainly sculptures with candy and sharp objects that often make appearances in my films. I love philosophizing and building ideas that may or may not come to fruition."
This has been a real pleasure for us to discover just a little bit more & scratch below the surface. Now we'll shut up & let the music do the talking...
3 tracks from White Hills, then onto Ego's Nuclear Bunker Discs.
"If I were to bring all the albums I love with me, I'd need a 15 foot uhaul. Music is medicine- the answer to banality and despair. The albums I chose are not just collections of amazing songs. They are exquisite gifts: complete sonic worlds that envelope my mind and transport me out of my own reality for their length."
(1) PJ Harvey- Rid of Me
"PJ Harvey's agony and wrath infect my mind with the skill of Artemis on Rid of Me. This album creeps up on you, literally- with a ballsy fade in, and attacks with such a beautiful fury. It's passionate and rocks so damn hard."
2. Bauhaus- In The Flat Field
"Art, poetry, darkness, dance- Bauhaus is an incredible band and this album is my favorite. It opens with a dirty guitar and a menacing single keyboard hit that veers out of time priming you for the shadowy desert ahead. I must mention that their latest 2008 release Go Away White is also a really amazing album."
3. Queen- A Night At The Opera
"In case you haven't caught on, I love drama and no one did it better than Freddie. Queen is hands down one of the greatest bands ever with four incredible songwriters crafting the most remarkable pieces with completely different flavors to make a truly interesting album. Believe me, I was tortured over the choice between A Night at Opera, News of the World and The Game but Brian May's The Prophet's Song seals the deal. It's an opera unto itself finishing with "I dare not laugh at the madman". Excellent advice."
4. X- Under The Big Black Sun
"This is my favorite album from a truly original band. The way they mixed punk rock, rockabilly, country influences and a touch of goth in the music and then topped it off with the steamy, rough team vocals of John Doe and Exene Cervenka made them absolutely peerless. The Hungry Wolf is probably my favorite love song ever."
5. Luxurious Bags- Frayed Knots
"This breathtaking record from the early nineties is begging to be the soundtrack for the saddest love story ever told. From beginning to end, the music makes you want to levitate and perish all at the same time. It's rich yet lo-fi and completely other-worldly."
