We first saw Gregg on Dead Tv. We first heard him with Cat Power. We first spoke to him through The Meek. You get the picture - busy - & not hanging around...
Delta 72, The Junction, Cat Power, All Saints Day, Rare Birds, The Meek, Pink Mountaintops.
Singer, Songwriter, pianist, guitarist, harpist, dj.
You shouldn't summarise a musical career like we just did unless you want to get onto specifics. We do. We want to get onto the here & the now so we won't trawl backwards...
On that basis we must have missed some bands, some instruments, but you get the picture. Multi instrumental. Likes some variety in his musical life & just loves being involved in different stages of the musical creative process.
Starting with an early love of all things Creation Records, honing his dj'ing talents, always searching for new sounds (known for spinning a real mix of music - from vintage American Soul to the Stones to garage & current.) has meant Gregg has not only easily swapped musical styles from band to band, but has wanted to. Genre breaking. You play what you're inspired by & if your inspirations are far & wide, so's your musical output.
He's been know to call his guitar his wife - his lifelong companion...& he's always been faithful - to the Gibson ES - 335.
Welcome to the Bunker Mr Gregg Foreman...
Curently on the go musically with steadfast Vebeth participants The Meek, getting down to some recordings with the much lauded Pink Mountaintops & returning to Cat Power when the time is right.
With dj slots on a regular basis there's a real combination of experimentation, cherishing musical heritage & looking to seek out those about to make their mark in the future.
You should know by now we like to dig to find out a little detail when compiling Nuclear Bunker Discs, but as we keep stressing, it's about today, not yesterday.
So today, Gregg is focused on the 3 bands above whilst continuing to seek out & discover new music - then there's this.
This being The Brothers of the Silver Sun - vintage clothing & accessories for the mutherfucking cool male of the species.
Gregg is building a team to bring a variety of styles & ranges, but has notably got the involvement of Sisters of the Black Moon who have made doing the same for the female of the species an art form.
Wow...plenty going on as you can see & we don't have the half of it covered. There's all the things we can't mention & really want to...but won't obviously. When the time is right we might get a bit of an advance warning...you listening Gregg!
Now we've covered the current music, the current ventures, we'll get onto a few videos plus those all important bunker choices. Those choices that still, importantly influence Gregg today.
We made great progress, we spoke for a few days & then got stuck on 10 albums. We banned the idea of Gregg Foreman from The Meek choosing 5 albums & Gregg Foreman from Cat Power choosing another 5. Back to the drawing board...
Based on those already-in-the-bunker members of The Meek, plus other acquaintances down there having made these choices, Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy, The Velvet Underground - Loaded & the first Suicide album were cast aside. Then following a couple of tough decisions, Gregg Had his 5.
Any final words before the descent down the steps? "This is too tough man, but since you have quite a gathering down there & my friends have taken some of my picks in the bunker already, I will fill in the appropriate blanks with essential listening. So this isn't technically my 5, but I couldn't have chosen 5 anyway. Your rules would have been broken for sure..." So First up, The Meek, performing live recently, then Cat Power from 2008. Then onto the 5...
Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain - "This is one of the most emotionally perfect albums. The sound is dark, romantic and mysterious! Seven Seas and My Kingdom are some of my favs ever . . ." (We've thrown in the John Peel sessions version as we think it's marvellous)
Can - Ege Bamyasi - "This is maybe 1972 ? When Can was not using many (or any?) inorganic sounds yet. The groove is tight like James Brown the music is cosmic and witchy! I'm So Green and Vitamin C are the standout songs for me!"
James Brown - Live at the Apollo 3 Revolution of the Mind - "The band is so tight and the songs are classic! Amen!"
Serge Gainsbourg - Melody Nelson - "The Erotic Poet Laureate of France! This record has the amazing band of the era! His Delivery and Style are second to none . HE owns the French Music Genre . L'hotel Particulier and Melody are sexy and full of soul."
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers - "This record for me has everything - The Keith bite of Can't you Hear Me Knocking and Brown Sugar, the swagger of Bitch and Sway, and the sonic beauty of Moonlight Mile! This is the perfect rock and roll record!"
So there you have it. Thanks to Gregg for playing along with us at Tincan; for doing what you do & for inspiring many along the way. He's the impetus & motivation to much of what surrounds him & is the link between many meetings & collaborations, both past & present. The music world wouldn't function as it does without good souls like Gregg Foreman... We hope the list making wasn't too bad for you.
