magick isn't dead. skeletons are.
by Nathan J Barrett.
It’s been a long time coming.
I’ve never written an album review. Never gone so far as to formally write words down on a sheet of paper. Sure I’ve had reviews in my head, as I listen to an album. A lot of times I just figured no one really wanted to read what I think anyway. But two things happened recently that changed my mind. The first, is my friend Beth making a suggestion that I should write about music. The second, was the release of the new Dead Skeletons album, Dead Magick. Personally, when a band can invoke me to want to create, I find that to be the highest of levels.
It’s been well over a year now, since I first heard Dead Mantra. The song literally blew my mind. Now I could come up with some creative words to say the same thing as “it was really good”. But, really, I just want to say, it really is good. Not that, “hey I like this song, it’s good,” attitude, but the “oh my GOD...this IS.really.good.” So, it’s only fitting that Dead Mantra would kick off this album. It’s the perfect place to start. Where it all began.
Where the journey started, as we waited patiently in anticipation for an album to drop, and it dropped on the day of all days. Judgement Day. Listening to this album, I recognized a number of the songs, as we were treated over the last year with some of them as they were completed. The visually stunning videos that were created to go with each of these songs, are deeply embedded in your soul. Sprinkled throughout the whole album, all those videos, come into your mind. They were just pieces of the large puzzle, and all those images, help form complete new images to create one large masterpiece. It’s a journey beyond any proportions.
Split into two parts, Dead Magick I and Dead Magick II, it’s almost like you need that break in the middle. It’s a journey that takes your mind and your soul to the deepest parts of your imagination. When the album comes to an end with Yama, followed by the closer Dead Magick II, you sit back and take a deep breath. It’s an exhausting ride, but for all the right reasons. It’s an artistic challenge.
Let it feed you.
Let it bring life to your soul.
Go. Be. Live. “He who fears death, cannot enjoy life.” It’s been a long time coming.
