One Step Back, TWO STEP HORROR by Nathan J Barrett
When I heard that a band, Two Step Horror, put out an album that they started in their living room, I was instantly intrigued, and was sure I was going to like it even before I heard it. Music made this way, always seems to have more soul, and passion. Aptly named “Living Room Music”, it brings out a soft but energy filled punch, and that soul and passion I knew would be there.
When I heard “King Bee”, I was instantly hooked.
It was so hauntingly beautiful, and it just stuck with me. One of those songs, that when you first hear it, you have to play it over and over, cause you can’t get enough. It took a bit, before I even realized that it was a cover of the old blues song that I so dearly love (most notably the Rolling Stones version). Even at almost 8 and a half minutes, you can easily burn an hour just listening to it a half dozen times.
Now I’ve read a lot of comparisons of what they sound like, and a lot of it makes sense. The Mazzy Star feel to the vocals. The music sounding like it’s straight out of a David Lynch movie. Sure these influences are prominent. When I listen to the album, I get the eerie sense that I’ve heard this before. It’s oh so familiar, but not like anything I’ve heard before. It’s very surreal. You find yourself floating beyond your conscience. Reality becomes fixated on a dream. Or is it, dream becomes fixated on reality?
The dark undertones, mixed with the dreamy layers, make for a feast to any music lover. You soon realize why you recognize the music. It’s straight out of YOUR dreams. Two Step Horror have made dreams into music. Follow along, and don’t get lost in the maze. You may not find yourself coming back.
More info:
Two Step Horror is a duo formed by Thordur Grímsson and Anna Margrét Björnsson in November 2008.
Most of the songs were written and recorded in the couple's living room during long dark winters and conjure up a dreamy world that's infused with a strange creepy longing and a slow narcotic drawl.
"Straight outta Twin Peaks, like a hypnotic bullet... a bullet of quietly bewitching, creepy lovelines... Or lovely creepiness."
Two Step Horror are part of Vebeth.
