Over the course of putting this article together, we've rid the world of fevered egos, we've built super computers that can do three things at the same time without crashing. We couldn't decide on the company name for our computer though...we did try to think of somewhere we could launch the bloody thing out of every time it crashed at the worst possible moment. The we realised Bill Gates really was a clever man...windows can't be beaten for a name. So we moved onto amps & our patent has just come through for top of the range gear that you can pick up with one finger.
I like this guy Perry. Sometimes you just know.
It's 2011 - gone are the days where you need to meet someone to really get to understand what makes them tick. I can understand why some people are reluctant about not feeling like they can begin to understand someone until they finally meet face to face.
But I'm not buying that.
The whole world is in a state of flux so why not throw your own beliefs into the melting pot too & see what happens?
Three letters changed everything: www.
I live thousands of miles away from Perry Pelonero but within the space of a few e mails we ranted at each other, we laughed at each other, we encouraged each other & we took each others temporary moments of pain...if that's not what the future of this whole industry needs at it's core I don't know what is.
If Tincan was a sports team, we would have Perry on temporary loan deal from another club - When The Sun Hits. They've supported each other since WTSH started; we recognise that & respect that.
Not only did www. make the world a smaller place, it also made the ability to get lost so much easier. Getting lost among the thousands of promoters, managers, websites, labels, bands. A whole industry built up around talent has reached the point where all it does is hide talent.
Think about that if you will.
What the hell am I on about, you might ask? Well, it's something like this. If we're not careful, multinational corporations will have completely sucked the life, the creativity & the energy out of all those with the talent to make a difference. There's only 1 thing that can stop it & that's little pockets of resistance growing up from out of nowhere, putting the pleasure back into the creative experience & helping each other along. I'm not talking about money here, those days where individual bands, small labels or websites can be self sufficient are long gone unless you get all the breaks in the world.
At the heart of the music industry must be groups, collectives, supporters...people who work together with similar tastes or philosophies. They need to both grow & the chance to grow. Once this happens then alliances with similar groups might form or just merge without there being a conscious decision taken...suddenly something new is created. Something that can carry on growing to a point where an alternative to the music industry as we know it begins to form. Then we can start talking about having the money available to make this creative process a little less painful.
Perry Pelonero is at the heart of something like this. He's like a catalyst; he's surrounded by musicians & like minded people. I know that he will be heavily involved, at the centre of a creative force even when he stops making music. That seems a long way off at the minute...
Perry couldn't decide whether to choose 5 albums specifically for the bunker or to go for his 5 all time favourite albums. He went for neither; he picked 5 for that moment.
So we'll do the same here. We'll talk about where he is now. Morpheme has fuelled his fire & it's exciting to see someone so excited. There's also Bliss.City.East. There was also Skylight until only days ago but that has been put to rest. For the moment, it's all about Morpheme.
Morpheme is Perry, Kim Welsh & Dean Garcia. As is possible these days the tracks are completed between the 3 over the internet, but there's plans afoot.
This will be worth watching it take shape...
So 2 tracks from Morpheme, then onto Perry's choices.
Final words? "My band is just awesome! I love it so so much! I'll pick a different 5 albums tomorrow so don't be asking me again..."
Enjoy the Morpheme tracks & watch this develop, enjoy Perry's picks...& I'll thank him for being in the middle of something special, a growing music community...
The Chameleons: What Does Anything Mean Basically - I remember buying this. Sitting down to listen and not being able to move from start to end. Its really hard to pick a song from this, but if i had to do so, it would be One Flesh... I think for me the guitars do it. Dave and Reg in my opinion are some of the most under rated guitar playing duo's ever. And should to this day, be given a load more credit than they get... Masters......
Pink Floyd: Meddle - Another one from start to end that just blows me away.. When live at Pompeii was released it was like i had a musical orgasm for the first time and could not stop them..... For this, its all of the band combined. Each with unique parts that pulled these songs together.. Echoes, of course would be the song that would be my favorite... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Swervedriver: Mezcal Head - Not just because i have known Adam for years now. Has nothing to do with it. The fact is, Mezcal Head is one of the best rock records released in the 90s. Period. Its a record you can again listen to from start to end and not lose interest..... If i had to pick a song from this album it would be never lose that feeling for sure... I seem to remember them telling me when they filmed this video the water was icy icy cold.... brrrrrrrrrr.. thats rock n roll man....
Led Zeppelin: In Through The Out Door - Hmm... Had some corny moments.. but i still love this album... I remember getting stoned out of my head listening to this with my cousin Harold. He had tickets to see zep and was going to take me and a friend with him, when Bonzo died.... Fucking lost...Its cool though i can say i was close at least.... If i had to pick a song from this it would be In the Evening. The guitars AGAIN... Just amazing....
Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works - This is a weird one for me. However, listen to this album very close and you will find things you did not hear the first time. The second time or even after listening 100 plus times... Its soothing.. It also gives me anxiety attacks.. No shit... Xtal is the track on this one... I can dance to it... And do from time to time :)
