Cult of dom keller: Psychedelic, acid, garage rock experiments for the eyes, ears, mind and soul...simple, yet so eloquently put.
Austin Psyche Fest 2011:
The Cult of Dom Keller is sizzling acid sickness, and it is highly contagious. This band was one of our Psych Fest favorites. The ideal venue for their sweeping, spacey, fuzzed-out sound, hard charging rhythms and slow, trance chant vocals would be a black light opium den with crushed velvet wallpaper.
Yeah, we lifted this too but read the rest of the review & more from where we lifted it... (http://mobile.austinist.com)
Ryan DelGaudio has just about recovered enough composure to contemplate life in the bunker following the band's return from Austin. We wanted his take on it:
"The Psych Fest was mind blowing and we played to an incredible crowd, what an experience!"
Plans are afoot & recording is underway on EP3. CD copies of EP's 1 & 2 have both sold out but are still available to download through bandcamp.
There's also a split single release coming out on the Custom Made Music label also featuring Ringo Deathstarr, Tambourines & Pete's International Airport. That's scheduled for an August release.
The Cult of Dom Keller can be categorised only in their ability not to be firmly placed in any category. They move from the easy journalistic box to box, track by track & there is a joy in being surprised by this. As one track can wash over you, the next can just as easily smash you in the face.
So 2 tracks from The Cult of Dom Keller, then onto Ryan's choices. After listening to them for 2 days solid I could have never have guessed Ryan's choices but that makes perfect sense as you can't do it with their music either.
Final words Ryan? "I could have chosen about fifty albums but these are my five if I have to go in the bunker today!"
Enjoy the Cult of Dom Keller, enjoy Ryan's picks...
HOWLIN WOLF - MOANIN IN THE MOONLIGHT.
When I was about 15 years old I used to listen to Jimi Hendrix day in, day out , learning the riffs, the solos, saving up for a Wah pedal and a Stratocaster.
But then I heard 'that' riff from 'Smoke stack lightnin' everything changed for me.
When I heard Hubert Sumlin's guitar riff I just fell in love with the raw, minimalism of that guitar.
I delved deeper into the record and the combination of that guitar and Howlin wolf's unique voice create a record that's hypnotic with soul bleeding from the record grooves which led me to fall in love with the records of John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Skip James et al
PINK FLOYD - PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN. When I first heard 'Piper at the gates of dawn' it blew my mind. Syd Barrett's strange little whimsical songs such as 'Bicycle' sitting on the same album as space rock opus 'Interstella Overdrive' took music to places I'd never heard before. It was the blues played in space! I had a reissue gatefold vinyl of this album and I would just sit and stare at at the cover whilst listening to it; a journey of sound that really was, and is out of this world. Lyrically, sonically, dynamically, production....everything. ' Take up thy stethoscope and walk' still blows my mind but if there's one riff I could have written ever, it would have been 'Lucifer sam'.
CHROME - HALF MACHINE LIP MOVES Shit album cover. Incredible record. This album is a fucking insane masterpiece. Imagine Neu!, Faust and Hawkwind played by acid garage aliens in a shed where kraut rock beats and acid guitar solos come in and out , up and down out of the tracks, songs just slow down, stop, noises, sonic implosions, explosions, acid trip fuzz freak outs recorded on the moon! Exactly.....go listen
SKIP SPENCE - WAR IN PEACE About five years ago I got hold of this record on vinyl and from the moment I heard it I knew it was something special. Written in 1969 after six months of being in a psychiatric ward, this psychedelic folk blues hybrid is mind blowing. A strange, haunting, beautiful psychedelic masterpiece. Dont waste time reading this, go listen!
BIRTHDAY PARTY - JUNK YARD Anyone who has heard this record will understand why it's in my Top 5. An acid blues nightmare of the Stooge's nihilsim with the tribal beat of Bo Diddley and the crooning of a brain damaged Jim Morrison. This album is so dark and claustrophobic yet at the same time fantastic songs. Rowland S Howard's unique string scrapings, Tracey Pew's twisted rockabilly bass lines and Mick Harvey's primitive drumming create the perfect swamp blues soundtrack to Nick Cave's unique voice. Howard's guitar playing definately had an influence on my playing, the less is more hauntingness juxtaposed with those blasts of total sonic noise. An influential record.
