When The Sun Hits often posts free downloads for it's readers, ranging from mini samplers compiled by record labels, tracks donated by bands, Amber's shoegaze radio shows, and other random things they uncover. Then there's the interviews...
You may have noticed a theme developing in the Friends & Family section of Tin Can & it should be explained: for someone who spends half his life listening to or reading about music, there's something almost joyous about finding writers who write without any ulterior motives & who only want to write about what they themselves enjoy. I'm not interested in what they don't like or what doesn't move them, in the same way I don't waste my time listening to music I don't like.
I remember watching the seeds of this site appear in conversations between a handful of people; it wasn't very many months ago & it's been great watching it develop - I almost feel proud to have seen it start out...
When The Sun Hits is special. This isn't music, this is writing about music. This is interviewing those who make the music, talking about the music they make. But I'm beginning to feel the same about a new interview as I do when there's a new release from a band I like...
The interviews are almost musical themselves, they're like a dance. Back & forth, digging a little deeper, unearthing facts & stories, sometimes not knowing where it's going, but going anyway on a hunch. They are some of the very best I've read & I've been reading a long time. Sometimes I know the bands, sometimes I don't. But I'll take a listen. This weekend I will be listening to The Consolation Project - the interview has made me search out this band. An excellent read. That is what journalism is supposed to be about, to make you want to investigate something yourself.
For all this, but especially for the interviews, we say to When The Sun Hits, we salute you...
