Now, we had a little "we are underwhelmed" pop when Bring The Light was first made public. Now the album's out, are we feeling any different?
First impressions - no! Nothing jumped out on the first listen, hell, even Bring The Light sounded better than most other tracks.
We knew we had to think about this a while, there's a lot to think about (we make the time to listen properly y'see, not like any of these shitty 100 000 read national publications who chuck reviews out the day things are released)...& realised this album has to be the "Most Difficult album to produce 2011". Forget The Strokes, they only had themselves to worry about. Forget U2 (in fact, please - just forget U2. Save the world? Save your bloody soul more like...Sorry, went off track a little). How did Beady Eye approach this? Maybe they didn't worry about it, but we have a sneaky feeling that when it came to the fine tuning, the monkey on the back played it's part.
I suppose it was destined to receive the press & blogging coverage it has - some like it, some think it's shit. If it sounded more like Oasis, some would like it & some would still think it was shit. They couldn't really win.
But maybe they have in a way - and here's our point. It's nothing like Oasis in terms of production. Maybe it feels like it's suffered just a little bit in it's trying not to be something rather than be something. So trying to reach a valid point in this little ramble, we're probably talking about the production rather than the songs themselves
We watched the BBC sessions, we listened to the Kexp sessions, we watched the Abbey Road sessions. Really liked the Abbey Road sessions - in conclusion to our witterings the songs sounded far better than the finished album - the studio monkey on the back having been removed, so to speak.
So we're happier now - looking at the footage, so are they. Happy, relaxed, just like the songs (if not the production)...it bodes well for the future. Good luck to 'em too.
