Catlow Lane talks to Mari Wilson

I remember getting my beehive done at Brent Cross. It was all my own hair. It was massive! I used to put all kinds of things in the back... birds, butterflies....

Singing sensation Mari Wilson burst on to the UK music scene in the early eighties, bucking the trend with her sky scraper beehive, ‘60s inspired outfits and a fully choreographed twelve piece band, The Wilsations. Mari’s Vegas style live shows soon became a hit with her rapidly growing audience, so it came as no surprise when her singles, including her biggest hit, “Just What I’ve Always Wanted” soon entered the top ten in the charts. Her fan base included fellow musicians, including Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry, who was so impressed with Mari’s recordings, he asked her to join him on his Avalon tour.

In the mid eighties, after a constant touring schedule of the UK, Europe and the States, Mari reduced the size of her band, (and her hair!), and changed musical direction with a jazz quartet. Playing at Ronnie Scotts in Soho, London’s Royal Festival Hall, where she supported the legendary Stan Getz, and jazz festivals along side BB King and Ray Charles, Mari continued to build a following of new fans.

In the nineties, Mari’s career took another unexpected turn as she moved into musical theatre, most notably playing Dusty Springfield, and along side Boy George in his hit West End show, Taboo. As versatile as ever, Mari also recorded the song “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps”  for BBC2’s hit comedy show, “Coupling”, as well as having her own radio show.

In 2005, Mari recorded an album “Dolled Up” that chronicled, in part, earlier experiences in her personal life. Upon hearing it, her friend, the Eurythmics, Dave Stuart, suggested Mari write a one-woman show based around the album. Entitled, “The Love Thing”, Mari wrote so much material for the show, she decided to release the songs on her sixth album, Emotional Glamour.

Having sustained a successful career in the music industry for over twenty years, Mari now divides her time between London and Los Angeles, and continues to write, record and perform. For coming tour dates, please visit http://www.mariwilson.co.uk
